Carl Kurtz

Photography of plants and animals associated with the tall grass prairie has been for me a yearly pursuit for the past 35 years. It began along an old railroad right-of-way on our central Iowa farm where a remnant of original prairie persisted. In 1988 we planted a section of the farm to a diverse prairie plant community for seed production. It now closely resembles Iowa's original prairie landscape.

My photography began in earnest in the early 1970s using 35mm cameras and a 4x5 inch view camera. This continued until 2004 when I switched to digital image capture. The switch has enabled one to capture animal behavior and other small natural details better than ever before.
